Individual

Some people just make life better. This award recognises someone who consistently goes out of their way to help others through small acts of kindness, being a friendly face, or supporting those in need. It’s about celebrating the everyday heroes who bring warmth and connection to their community.

June Murphy

June brings colour, joy and connection to her community through her dedication to the communal gardens where she lives. Every day, she spends hours planting flowers, watering plants and tidying the outdoor spaces. She often uses her own money to buy plants and always greets neighbours with a wave and a smile as she tends to the gardens.

Her work has made a real difference to residents, especially those who are housebound. The gardens offer a beautiful view and a reason to smile. More people now sit outside, chat with neighbours and enjoy the fresh air. June’s efforts have also supported local biodiversity, attracting more bees and wildlife to the area.

June has said her gardening gives her a sense of purpose and pride. Her commitment to making the space welcoming for others is a powerful example of how small acts of kindness can have a big impact.

Stacey Priestley

Stacey is the founder of Friends for Everyone, a community group based in Havercroft and Ryhill that supports disabled adults and their carers. As a carer herself, Stacey recognised a gap in local services and took action to create a space where people could connect, share experiences and enjoy inclusive activities.

The group hosts regular events that include sensory experiences, social time and themed celebrations. One standout event was a Bavarian-style festival held in May, complete with music, food and decorations. Stacey, heavily pregnant with twins at the time, ensured the event went ahead so that no one would be disappointed.

Stacey’s work has helped build confidence and pride among attendees, with some taking on small roles at events. She encourages sustainability by using reusable materials and recycled items. Her dedication, even while managing her own family and health challenges, has created a lasting and positive impact on the lives of many.

Dean Walker

Dean is a passionate community organiser who consistently puts others first. He has raised money for a wide range of causes, including cancer support, children with serious illnesses and charities such as Macmillan and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. His most recent event raised over £2,000 for a local family whose child was diagnosed with a tumour.

Dean also runs a local amateur rugby team that promotes men’s mental health, offering a space for connection and support. He organises fun days, charity events and community picnics, always involving local businesses to keep the benefits within the community.

His work brings people together, raises vital funds and creates opportunities for joy and healing. Dean’s dedication and generosity make him a true example of positive impact in action.
