Group or Individual

This award is for those who lead with courage and inspire action. Whether it’s launching a new initiative, campaigning for a cause, or sparking positive change, we’re celebrating the individuals and groups who are making things better for others and showing what’s possible when people come together.

Barracks Community Association

Barracks Community Association has demonstrated the power of community-led advocacy by challenging Vico Homes to address a pressing issue affecting residents on the Barracks estate. Concerned about the affordability of district heating and its impact on wellbeing, the group took action by surveying residents and compiling their feedback into a detailed report. This was shared directly with Vico Homes, prompting collaborative discussions and a commitment to change.

Acting as a critical friend, the group worked constructively with Vico Homes’ Sustainability and Finance teams to explore solutions. Their efforts led to the successful application of the Energy Bill Discount Scheme, resulting in reduced heating costs and refunds for residents. The group also advocated for energy-efficient upgrades and the installation of individual boilers, giving residents greater control over their energy use and financial choices.

Through regular dialogue and partnership with Vico Homes, Barracks Community Association has helped improve living conditions for over 180 residents. Its work has reduced financial strain, improved mental wellbeing and promoted environmental sustainability. This nomination recognises their courage, persistence and the positive change they have helped deliver for our customers.

Families First Uniform Bank

Families First Uniform Bank began as a small initiative between two friends and has grown into a vital support network for families in Sharlston and surrounding areas. The group provides free school uniforms, runs a prom bank to help children attend their special events, and organises seasonal activities such as toy hampers and Christmas dinners.

The group also offers free family fun days and affordable outings during school holidays. All of this is funded through raffles and donations, with the founders giving their time freely. Their work has helped ease financial pressures for families and created joyful experiences for children who might otherwise miss out.

Families First Uniform Bank is a powerful example of how compassion and community spirit can make a lasting impact.

Outwood Litter Heroes

Outwood Litter Heroes is a volunteer-led group dedicated to keeping the local area clean and safe. One of the group’s most active members, Ryan Goodlad, regularly carries out litter picks and has become a well-known figure in the community. His efforts have received recognition from local councillors and the MP.

The group’s work has improved the appearance of the neighbourhood, encouraged others to take pride in their surroundings, and helped protect the environment and local wildlife. By removing harmful waste, the group has reduced pollution and created a healthier space for everyone.

Outwood Litter Heroes shows how consistent, hands-on action can inspire change and strengthen community values.
